The Youth Coalition will be attending the upcoming Civil Society Hearing on Universal Access as part of the lead up to the United Nations General Assembly 2011 High Level Meeting on AIDS this June 2011 to review progress of the implementation of the 2001 Declaration of Commitment and the 2006 Political Declaration on HIV & AIDS. The CS Hearing will be held in New York City on April 8th, 2011 with pre-meetings held on April 7th.
Building on our experiences at the UNGASS HLM on HIV and AIDS in 2006 and 2008, the YC will be meeting with other youth networks, including the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA), Y+ (the youth programme of GNP+) and the World AIDS Campaign (WAC), among others, to influence the process and advocate for universal access and the inclusion of progressive language in outcome documents that address the sexual and reproductive rights of young people, particularly key-affected populations.
In cooperation with WAC, GNP+, YouthRISE, GYCA, and the HIV Young Leaders Fund, the YC took the lead on developing key advocacy messages for young people for the upcoming HLM on AIDS. GNP+ and WAC also worked in consultation with the Y+ constituency and key informants, to develop advocacy messages and a supporting advocacy brief for young people living with HIV for the HLM. These documents will be shared at the Civil Society Hearing this week, and you can download them all at the bottom of this page.
YC members have been involved in a range of activities, including collaborating with various global youth networks to develop advocacy messages for young people, and participating in regional consultations. Specifically, YC members participated in the regional consultations for Latin America and the Caribbean, and for Asia and the Pacific, where they advocated for progressive youth language in outcome documents.
