He began working in the local organization Movimento de Intercâmbio de Adolescentes de Lavras (MIAL) on adolescent sexuality, sexual and reproductive rights, empowerment of youth, gender issues, and HIV prevention developing workshops and meetings. He was part of the Movimento de Adolescentes do Brasil - MAB (Brazilian Adolescents Movenment) for 6 years developing activities related to sexual and reproductive rights in different parts of the country. Ivens has been part of the project of the Ministry of Health and Education, Saúde e Prevenção nas Escolas (Health and Prevention at Schools) for 4 years now. He served as the Regional Focal Point for Latin America for the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS during 2009 and 2010.
