Since arriving in New York to attend the High Level Meeting on Youth, the Youth Coalition’s delegation has been hard at work! On Sunday, July 24th, the YC, in partnership with IPPF-WHR & Central Office, YPEER, Advocates for Youth, YouAct, and GYCA, facilitated the Sexual and Reproductive Rights Caucus, with meeting space generously provided by the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
The SRHR Caucus was a great success! Over 50 participants from 30+ countries (from all regions!) were represented and over 25 SRHR-focused partner organizations were in attendance. The objectives of the Caucus were to develop SRHR advocacy and communications strategies for the HLM on Youth, and to strategize towards a post-2015 rights-based youth development agenda.
Sessions focused on developing advocacy messages to be used throughout the HLM on Youth with official delegations, UN agencies, and other youth delegates. Caucus participants went on to develop strategies to effectively communicate these messages, through social and traditional media channels, with roundtable speakers, delegations and UN officials. Facilitators and participants recognized the importance of developing effective communications strategies due to the limited opportunities for young people to input into the HLM outcome document.
Wrapping up the Caucus, participants identified concrete actions to be taken in the lead up to major international conferences and processes; such as the 2012 Commission on Population and Development, the 2012 Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals in 2015.
In the follow-up to the Caucus, the YC delegation is working closely with participants to share our advocacy messages with other youth delegates, official delegations and UN officials. The YC is also tweeting up a storm! For updates, be sure to follow us @youth_coalition, and our friends and partners: @YouAct_Europe, @AdvocatesTweets, @YPEER, @ippf, @GYCA, and @ippf_WHR.
